Metadata Reports Now Available in Spreadsheet Format

In the news Feb 18 2010 is the announcement that starting today, spreadsheet versions of the stock metadata reports will now be e-mailed out directly to people whose names are on our distribution list.

Stan Pokutylowicz, SMK’s System Architect & Site-Design Specialist says:

“We took this step to address the needs expressed by visitors to our site. The popularity of stock metadata became very clear after we started producing our series daily reports on featured companies. And then the lid got blown off the top after a series of articles was released by articlebase.com last year entitled “Day Trading: Ten Reasons For Using Stock Metadata”.

Stock metadata reports are created from Monday to Friday. They present a combination of historical and statistical data on a stock’s price and number of shares traded. These reports are useful for getting a handle on a stock’s trading activity.

Visitors to our site liked the PDF reports that we delivered but had difficulties importing the PDF data into spreadsheets. When contacting us, they asked us to also make this data available to them, in spreadsheet format if possible.

We listened to them and after much work, the creation of stock metadata reports became a Microsoft Excel application duplicating the functionality of the original system.

But then we were presented us with new challenges. Our hosting provider didn’t allow XLS files to be stored on their servers. Furthermore, the sizes of these files exceeded the e-mail transmission limits which restricted our distribution to snail mail. So we had to find a way to get these reports out to the people who needed them.

After much thought, we came out with a solution to this problem. Most of the interactive functionality was removed from the Excel application. This resulted in smaller files that we could send out using our e-mail facilities.

An e-mail distribution list was established and the process to easily request these files was also added to the website. And so far, everything is working perfectly.”

Well it safe to say that this team has overcome another challenge presented to them. In subsequent discussions with him, Stan said that a growing number of people have indicated a desire to purchase the fully functional spreadsheet application to produce their own reports. And it seems that a product offering to satisfy this request is now in the works. An announcement will be forthcoming.
